There are a variety of ways to reduce project costs without sacrificing a quality product. The first step in selecting the correct material specification is to understand the intended use of the pipe.
We have encountered many casing and pipe pile specifications that specify API 5L steel pipe. This grade of pipe was developed for transportation pipelines in the natural gas and oil industries. While API 5L is an excellent product, it is not typically designed for structural reasons when used in casing and pipe piling projects.
In the American Petroleum Institute, "API 5L Specification Line Pipe" seamless and welded steel pipe specifies requirements for use in oil and gas transportation systems. To do so, it is subjected to extensive testing, including hydrostatic, non-destructive and destructive testing.
Hydrostatic testing is a method by which the strength and leakage of pressure retaining equipment can be safely tested. The required pressure varies depending on diameter, wall thickness and material grade.
Radiographic and ultrasonic testing is required on 100% of the longitudinal and circumferential welds. These tests ensure that 100% of the weld is free of defects.
Destructive testing is a group of analytical techniques used to evaluate the properties of a material, component or weld, in which a sample of the product is tested to determine the point of failure. Destructive testing is used to determine how a material will perform under load.
API 5L Seamless Steel Pipe / API 5CT Oil Casing Pipe for Oil Casing Pipe
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) "A252, Standard Specification for Welded and Seamless Steel Pipe Piles" may be sufficient for most casing projects. This is the standard used by T BAILEY Inc. when no other specifications are provided in the request for quotation. With 100% visual inspection requirements and dimensional checks, A252 is the most cost effective alternative to API 5L.
The "API 2B Specification for Structural Steel Pipe Fabrication" is similar to ASTM A252, but API 2B provides additional quality control for welds, including 100% visual inspection, 100% RT or UT for circumferential joints, and 10% RT or UT for longitudinal joints.
Additional requirements can be added to ensure further engineering requirements are met.
